Overcoming Excel's Limitations

Excel is a great "personal productivity" tool.
But it has three key limitations that can cause you significant problems: (1) Multi-user - Excel is not designed for collaboration in applications such as order processing and budgeting. (2) Multi-dimensions - Excel does not deal easily with multi-dimensional situations, such as reporting or budgeting for sales and margin across product, project, geography, market, and time period. (3) Accuracy and integrity - Excel formulae and links are easy to get wrong, and difficult to check. The larger the reporting or budgeting model, the easier it is to include a significant error. Overcoming these issues often means long unwanted delays in processes such as reporting and budgeting. Ineffective, inefficient, and very costly in manpower. In addition, it is common for Excel models to be un-documented, and extremely difficult for anyone other than the original author to maintain. You can therefore easily find yourself in "Excel hell". But Excel is a great way of presenting information, and collecting information such as budgets and forecasts. So you probably won't want to lose those advantages.
